Shenzhen-based Engwe has just launched the M20, a 45km/h (28mph) speed pedelec/e-moped that is currently available for just £1,049. Without having actually tried the bike, we’d say the 750W rear hub motor is probably more important than the pedals on this one.
Engwe mostly focuses on folding e-bikes (we’ve got one in for review at the minute, actually), but the firm also offers a hybrid model and an e-scooter.
The M20 is something else again and while Engwe has recently established a UK warehouse, we assumed it would be reserved for other markets where it might prove less of a square peg in a round legislative hole. As we frequently point out, it can be challenging to get on the road with a 45km/h e-bike in this country for one reason or another.
But there it is on the website with shipping slated for April, looking not entirely unlike a Super73 bike.
The 750W motor offers peak power of 1kW and this is teamed with a single 624Wh battery as standard, although it can be fitted with a second one as well.
You also get 7-speed gears, “mountain tyres and wheels” and front and rear suspension. For reasons known only to Engwe, the bike also features two front lights as well as one at the rear.
At about 40kg, it’s big for an e-bike but small for an e-moped. Engwe reckon you can get 40-odd miles out of a single charge if it’s used as a pedal-assist bike. Looking at the riding position, you probably wouldn't want to pedal that far.
The standard price is £1,199 with one battery or £1,499 with two. However, there’s £150 off at the minute.
