Bet you didn't know you need special electric bike clothing for riding your electric bike? Well, you don't, of course. But that doesn't mean people aren't making it. Italian company Pure Electric have a full outfit for you, created by designer Veronica Stampacchia and Engineer Marcello Stampacchia.
"The intent was to present a clothing line specific for E-Bike riders to satisfy the higher performances like in front safety giving a touch of elegance", say Pure Electric. To that end they're designed with removeable protectors in the places where you might scuff yourself should the worst happen and you should hit the deck.
The jackets have a diamond pocket in the rear. You can use it to store an extra rain shell in case of really bad weather, or fit a hydration pack or back protector.
If you're thinking it looks like a halfway house between normal kit and motorbike clothing, that's what we're thinking too. Do you need that extra protection on an electric bike? Probably not for running about town on a standard bike, although to be fair to Pure Electric they seem to be pitching the clothing more to riders of the higher-power S-pedelecs that are legal in some European countries. S-pedelecs can have up to 500W of assistance and they're limited to 45km/h, so in terms of speed they're a bit closet to moped territory.
The clothing "combines the ergonomics, lightness and breathability of cycling clothing with the resistance performances of motorcycling clothing providing safety, wearability and weather protection."
The Diamond JKT won a Gold Award at Eurobike 2015 and now is nominated for a 2017 German Design Award for product design in the fashion and sport category.
