"Ideal for where an e-bike or scooter isn’t enough, but a delivery van would be too much," seems a nice summary of the target market of the PNY Ponie P2 electric delivery motorbike. That quote is from Netzah Sadeh, one of the founders of PNY, who was speaking at the debut of the Ponie P2 at the 2023 EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show.
The P2 Ponie itself certainly boasts some impressive stats on paper, most eyecatching of all the combination of a 60mph top speed with a 120kg payload capacity (that's in addition to the rider).
It's powered by a combination of a 4kW rear hub motor and a 6.7hWh CATL battery and has ABS.
In terms of bells and whistles the Ponie P2 features a CarPlay-ready 7-inch colour screen and glovebox with a USB port.
Will you ever see it on the roads? PNY seem to be saying so - apparently it has type approval for use in Europe as an L3e class electric motorcycle (roughly equivalent to a 125cc petrol powered motorbike) and PNY are aiming at deliveries beginning in Q2 2024.
Two wheels good, three wheels better?
Judging from pictures and spec alone, the Ponie P2 looks a capable beast, though personally if loading much above 50-60kg, I'd prefer three or more wheels as I have found they tend to be inherently more stable with heavy loads on board.
One option might be the DNY's Ponie 3 - a three wheeler - albeit only in the development and testing phase currently.
Commercial outfits from Amazon to Zoomo have often opted for lower speed (15.5mph) machines with four wheels. Such vehicles look to be not much wider than the Ponie P2 and have the advantage they can use bike lanes as they are legally classed as e-bikes.
The best heavy duty load hauling I've tried bar none is the Carla Cargo trailer, rated to carry up to 200kg of cargo.
