Chinese e-bike firm Cyrusher has brought out something a little bit different to their usual repertoire... a 44mph electric surfboard. Stepping away from the beefed up electric bikes we’re used to seeing from the brand, they seem to be exploring new realms and diving into the unknown with this offering, named Thunders.
So far it looks like it’s only available in the US, and costs a hefty $11,999, although it is currently on sale for $9,999. For your money, you get a jet pump direct drive propulsion system with a 5kW motor, which offers peak power of 10kW.
As we said before, the max speed is 44mph, or 70kph. The battery weighs a hefty 12kg, but this isn’t surprising given the sheer capacity – 3.6kWh. This, Cyrusher claims provides up to 60 minutes of surfing time, and takes 2-3 hours to recharge.
As surfboards go, it’s not exactly lightweight for most of us to chuck over our shoulder and run down to the water with. Without the battery, it weighs 19kg but add it on and you’re suddenly hoisting a 39kg board around.
So why an electric surfboard? Surfing is a very weather dependent sport, as many sports are. But too calm of a day on the sea and you’re unlikely to find many waves, and too rough and it becomes dangerous.
The eSurfboard claims to “eliminate the need for waves” by providing the necessary forward momentum – maybe not the full 44mph, but enough that you don’t have to change tack and become a stand up paddleboarder.
Cyrusher do have a UK arm which sells a range of their e-bikes, and which previously came under fire from the Advertising Standards Authority for 'misleading adverts' regarding 750W motor e-bikes. Unfortunately for us, there is currently no mention of the eSurfboard on the UK website.
