Xenophon2, the newer models (Cowboy 3, Cowboy Cruiser/ST/Classic, Cowboy 4/ST) seem to have a manual way to turn on the bike without the app by unlocking an relocking the battery. Without the phone, the bike will not lock until 5 minutes of inactivity, so the user would have to rely on external lock (which I assume most people would have anyway).

It might be worth pointing out that Cowboy's financial auditors have expressed concerns last year about the company's ability to continue as a going concern due to accumulating losses, debt servicing issues and a systemic shortage of cash that requires it to launch a fourth round to raise extra capital.

Should the company go belly up, there is an excellent chance that its bikes will be rendered all but inoperable due to the app no longer being available or maintained.  Caveat emptor.

I can all too easily see Cowboy doing a 'Van  Moof' between now and a year.

Looks-wise, there's something of the Schindelhauer Viktor about this.
