Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) e-scooter operator Beryl is to reintroduce its 3mph ‘go-slow’ zone along the seafront from next month.

Just over a year ago, it was announced that Beryl e-scooters would be banned from Bournemouth promenade at peak times in July and August.

However, the firm later announced a change of tack with geo-fencing technology instead employed to automatically slow scooters to 3mph in designated ’Go Slow Zones’ between 10am and 6pm – the period when bikes are banned.

Push notifications to riders’ phones alerted riders when they were about to enter these zones so they would be aware of the impending speed change.

Beryl has confirmed that the same measures with the same 3mph speed restriction will be in place in 2022.

The Go Slow Zones will run from the Jazz Cafe at Sandbanks in the west, past Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers and end at Southbourne Beach in the east.

Within the Beryl app, they’ll be shaded in yellow with a tortoise icon. No Go areas are shaded in black with a stop sign icon. A clock icon highlights the operating hours.

Chief executive Phil Ellis said: “It is safe and convenient to ride an e-scooter throughout most areas of Bournemouth and Poole, and they continue to provide a fun and cost-effective alternative to car travel, reducing congestion and carbon emissions.

“However, we know from previous experience and from working closely in partnership with BCP Council that the promenade areas are extremely popular during the summer months and attract thousands of people.

“It is therefore paramount that we not only consider the safety of the wider public, but also our riders too as people venture out to enjoy the picturesque scenery and many attractions.

“The technology involved in the ‘Go Slow’ zones is incredibly safe and has been vigorously tested by our operations team, so riders can be assured that when they enter these zones their e-scooter will gradually slow down to the set limit.”
