Excuse us for burdening you with questions and for leaving you asking what it’s all about, but the launch video for Yamaha’s new EMF is… well, it’s not quite unbelievable, but it’s pretty full-on considering the vehicle in question is an electric moped.
UNLOCK THE FUTURE is the somewhat shouty title.
Once the unlocking has been done (with what looks like a Yamaha-branded hotel room card) the EMF embarks on its mission to razz around a futurescape for a bit. The whole thing then climaxes with every light in the city switching on.
We have no idea what it’s about, if we’re honest. Economical use of electric energy or something? Who knows?
Auto Evolution reports that the EMF is a collaboration with Gogoro, a Taiwanese firm who have developed a battery-swapping platform for electric two-wheelers.
The Gogoro network is a big deal. They say they’re carrying out around a third of a million battery swaps a day in Taiwan and Electrive reports that their exchange stations are likely to outnumber petrol stations before the end of the year.
They’ve also done a deal with Hero MotoCorp, the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world, to introduce their network in India.
The EMF will feature a 7.6 kW mid-motor with a maximum torque of 26Nm and a quoted 0-50km/h time of 3.5 seconds.
It will be powered by Gogoro’s batteries and will go on sale in Taiwan next month.
