Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has reportedly been handed more fines for his on-court behaviour than any other player in ATP history. He’s now facing a couple of off-court fines too after a Melbourne e-scooter trip.
Kyrgios has variously been fined for unsportsmanlike conduct, abusing a spectator and even for lack of effort.
The Guardian reports that he is now facing a ‘please explain’ from police after being photographed riding a Lime hire e-scooter without a helmet and also with a passenger aboard. These are both offences in the state of Victoria and could draw fines.
Australia currently has a number of ongoing e-scooter trials, similar to those underway in the UK.
Lime and Neuron are operating across three Melbourne councils. A Lime helmet can be seen dangling from the bars of the e-scooter in the photo of Kyrgios and his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi.
Victoria police chief commissioner Shane Patton said Kyrgios would be spoken to by Melbourne highway patrol.
“It’s been reported to us, so because it’s been reported to us, we’ll reach out to Mr Kyrgios through Tennis Australia,” he said. “We don’t issue fines or anything like that without speaking to people to understand the circumstances and firstly identify that it is him.”
Patton said the fine for a rider (or passenger) not wearing a helmet was $231 and that there were also $185 fines for carrying a passenger.
The photo came to light just before the Australian Open. Kyrgios subsequently withdrew from the tournament due to a knee injury which necessitated surgery.
