You might remember that back in 2016 we featured the Momentum Electric VIT-S here on ebiketips. We managed to get some time on the bike at the Eurobike Show, and we were impressed. It's a high quality fast leaisure or city bike, and notable for its Nidec motor, which puts out a hefty 95Nm of torque. Now it's funding on Kickstarter with some good discounts on offer.
You might not have heard of Nidec but they're Japan's largest motor manufacturer, making everything from tiny camera lens motors to generators for wind turbines. So they know what they're doing.
The motor on the bike we tested was a pre-production sample but we were still really impressed with it: it's got masses of pull and a nice smooth application of power.
Momentum Electric know a thing or two about putting an e-bike together. We liked their Upstart 2-speed city bike, and we liked the VIT-S when we rode it too.
One neat feature of the VIT-S is its shock absorbing handlebar, which is designed to flex to take the sting out of the firm front end. It sounds like it might be a bit scary, but in use it's just comfortable. You don't notice the flex until you swap to a bike with standard bars. The rest of the bike's build is very high spec, with a Nuvinci continuously variable rear hub, a Gates Carbon Drive belt transmission, Magura MT4 disc brakes and integrated lighting.
List price for the VIT-S is €4,200 (£3,700) but you can currently get one on the Kickstarter for €2,799 (£2,460). So you can get well over 30% off if you jump in as an early adopter. Based on our impressions of the bike from our first ride, we'd say it was very good value at that discounted price.
