It seems like ages ago that the beast from the east brought us a few joyous days of car-free city centre frolicking. While the snow was falling we went out and shot one of our new arrivals, the £2,800 Raleigh Mustang Comp Electric. An electirc adventure bike? Why not?
The e-road market is an intersting place right now. Not long ago we told you about the Bianchi Impulso e-Road that had landed at ebiketips, and now we have another take on the all-purpose electric road/gravel bike, this time from Raleigh. The Mustang uses a 1x11 drivetrain the same as its non-powered stablemates, but adds a Shimano STEPS motor.
This is the E6000 city motor, as opposed to the more powerful mountain bike unit, but it's still plenty powerful to get you up and down the hills, especially when mated with the wide-range transmission.
The Mustang uses a SRAM Apex drivetrain, with hydraulic brakes for assured stopping. The 11-42 rear cassette means there's plenty of gears for both cruising and climbing.
The Mustang uses 650b wheels and 42mm Clement tyres for a more cushioned ride. As you can see, there's plenty of space in the frame and fork to accommodate them. You could probably even go a little bit bigger if you wanted to veer more towards off-road use.
If you want to carry your kit on the bike rather than on your back then there's rack mounts on the dropped seatstays. And there's mudguard mounts too if you want to turn the Mustang into a more all-weather road machine.
With a 400Wh battery on the downtube and a reasonably low overall weight of around 20kg, you should be able to get a decent range out of the power system for your adventures. We're currently putting the Mustang through its paces and we'll let you know what we think.
