The UK-developed futuristic and fast Zapp EV i300 high performance e-moped has been a long time in the making. Zapp was launched in 2017 and June 2022 saw its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The ‘high-performance city bike capable of motorcycle levels of performance’ is now available to reserve.
Futuristic design
Whilst it's often the performance stats that grab the headlines - most notably 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds - there are many futuristic design elements to the i300. What is described as an 'exoskeleton frame' is 'combined with lightweight alloy and composite bodywork' and the claimed weight is 92kg.
It's not only the traditional steel tubed chassis that has disappeared on this striking design. The usual heavy rear sprung suspension is replaced by what's described as an 'adjustable pushrod rear suspension fitted to a single-sided rear swing arm'. Meanwhile, at the front, there are upside down front forks.
Back to the performance though. There is what is described as a 14kW 'internal permanent magnet motor' with 'super high torque and efficiency' linked to the rear wheel with a 'slingshot drive' (carbon fibre belt drive). Note the 14kW is peak power and the continuous power rating is 7.2kW.
The motor is complemented by two portable battery packs at 720Wh and 6kg each with a claimed range of 37 miles (that's in Eco mode with a 4kW cap on power output) and a touted recharge time from 20% to 80% in under 40 minutes.
There's also a neat blend of style and and information from a full-colour display which gives detailed info with easy push buttons for safe system control. If you want to change the look of the i300 there is what Zapp claim to be the 'world's first interchangeable front fender'.
Options and prices
There will be various i300 models on offer which are now available to reserve.
The most 'basic' Ocean model will start at £5,750 (after £500 deduction of the government grant).
i300 Bio and Carbon models will feature natural and carbon composite bodywork with both starting at £6,995.
Finally, a limited-edition Carbon Launch Edition that includes 'diamond cut wheels' is priced at £7,995.
Zapp promises that sales will go through the firm's online platform although there will be online and physical showrooms and orders will be delivered to buyers by a 'trained Zapper technician'. Apparently 'Zapper vans' will feature tool kit and spare parts to allow on site servicing. Zapp say they aim to deliver within 16 weeks from your order date.
