The micro-mobility startup Tier – which recently announced it would be running a year-long trial in York – has raised €250m (£190m) to accelerate expansion.

The Berlin-based company is currently operating 60,000 e-scooters across 80 cities in 10 countries.

In September, it deployed 100 e-scooters in York – primarily at the University of York – with more e-scooters and e-bikes to follow.

The scooters come with the largest front wheel in the market, a wider foot plate, dual suspension, a double kick-stand, dual drum brakes and an integrated helmet.

“We believe that the e-scooter trials will bring major benefits to York residents, from cleaner air to reduced congestion, and crucially they can also help to get people moving again safely post-Covid,” said Tier UK General Manager, Fred Jones.

As well as further expansion, the latest round of funding will help fast track the Tier Energy Network project that will see thousands of electric vehicle charging stations installed in cities across Europe.

“After achieving profitability with our e-scooters, we have in place the foundations to lead the way towards seamless and sustainable mobility,” said the firm’s co-founder and CEO, Lawrence Leuschner.

“Our vision is a completely new way of how we will move in cities in the future: all electric, shared and affordable, and with different vehicles powered by one energy network. Together with city and national government we will build the best solutions to ensure safe, highly efficient, and sustainable movement from A to B.”
